Text

Yeah! The music of Munich techno and house producer Hell meets the linguistic acrobatics of Jonathan Meese for the first time. In an experimental studio session, the artists met back in 2019 to explore where the joint journey could go. Hell's stylistic interests mixed with Meese's musical idols - from DAF to Sisters of Mercy to Kraftwerk - can now be heard on this techno-elegiac album. But the secret star of the disc is mother Brigitte Meese, who accompanied the duo with her spoken word vocals.

LOLITA (R)EVOLUTION (RUFSCHÄDIGENST) -
IHR ALLE SEID DIE LOLITA EURER SELBST!

Theater Dortmund

Dortmund

Works Text

With "Lolita", Jonathan Meese developed a theater project with and for the Theater Dortmund. Based on the equally controversial and world-famous novel Lolita by the Russian author Vladimir Nabokov, he places the myth of Lolita at the center of his art, a (r)evolutionary utopia. Rich in associations and with powerful imagery, he transfers the novel into his mythological cosmos: Lolita as the ideal image of the woman, the completely instinctive seductress who actually has no interests of her own, except for this: the perfect embodiment of a new order to be established. Lolita here becomes the ideal, mere image of a thing, pure weapon, which is no longer a human being but a state, like - for Meese - Marquis de Sade, Oscar Wilde, Scarlett Johansson or Adolf Hitler. The ensemble members and guests take on all the characters of the novel simultaneously: each is a Lolita or a Dolly or a Dolores or simply a Lo. Of course you are also Lolita's mother, Dolores Haze and the main protagonist Humbert Humbert as well as his rival Clare Quilty. Without fixed arrangements, each evening an independent performance is created.

VATER - LIEBE

Overbeck-Gesellschaft

Lübeck

Text

With his painting, Jonathan Meese has transformed the fourth exhibition location under the title "FATHER / LOVE" into a total work of art. In the three horseshoe-shaped interlocking rooms, he draws from his extensive treasure trove of quotations, ranging from ancient heroic sagas to outstanding figures of history and art to the trash and pop culture of the present. In accordance with his total rejection of any form of ideology, which in his opinion has a doctrinaire effect on people and dictates to them who or what they have to be, the artist seeks in this exhibition to overcome references and traditional interpretations. He playfully reconceives them by completely incorporating the panorama-like possibilities and areas of the Overbeck society into his work.

MUTTER - EVOLUTION

Kunsthalle St. Annen

Lübeck

Works Text

The Kunsthalle St. Annen showed a comprehensive presentation on the topic "MOTHER / EVOLUTION". Large-format paintings, drawings and sculptures provided insight into all phases of the artist's work. In a room and video installation, Jonathan Meese also explored the search for a good place to live, the way people live and the associated theme of security.
The subtitle offers a reference to Brigitte Meese, a key figure in the life and work of the artist. At the same time it points to the universal significance of motherhood as the founder of a future-oriented (artistic) process of evolution, which in Meese's work always means a future-oriented development determined by art.

GROSSVATER - GOLD

Günter Grass Haus

Lübeck

Works Text

The exhibition "GROSSVATER / GOLD" in the Forum for Literature and Fine Arts is dedicated to the manifold artistic talents and forms of expression of Jonathan Meese. Meese transformed the exhibition space in the Günter Grass House into an intimate biographical space of art. On display are exercise books, pictures, photos, texts, sculptures and films, which originate from the artist's inexhaustible and sometimes comically bizarre fund. Special emphasis is placed on the themes of home and origin. The show offers a personal insight into the life story of Jonathan Meese and his family.

GROSSMUTTER - MACHT

St. Petri zu Lübeck

Lübeck

Works Text

The most extensive presentation of Jonathan Meese's work to date, "Dr. Zuhause: K.U.N.S.T. (Erzliebe)" in Lübeck, began with a room-filling installation in St. Petri. The artist, who spent his childhood and youth in the nearby town of Ahrensburg, dedicates himself here to the theme of home and family and interprets it in his unique way. Each of 5 exhibition locations is therefore dedicated to a family part and an attribute assigned to it. In St. Peter's the "GRANDMOTHER / POWER" is honored. The large-scale cooperation of the Kunsthalle St. Annen, the Overbeck Society, the Günter Grass House, the St. Petri Church in Lübeck and the Kulturwerft Gollan made a total work of art possible in the form of retrospectives, installations, specially developed works and performances.

DIE IRRFAHRTEN DES JONATHAN MEESE

Pinakothek der Moderne

München

Works Text

In Greek mythology, the hero Odysseus, on his odyssey, insists on dangerous adventures and solves mysterious tasks - only to return home as a different person in the end. Like a contemporary Odysseus, the artist Jonathan Meese (*1970 in Tokyo, lives in Berlin) embarks on an imaginary journey with numerous stations in the exhibition.
In drawings, paintings and sculptures from over 20 years, encounters with the most diverse ambivalent protagonists and situations take place, which the artist confronts in his most archaic role as symbolic savior and liberator.

Gespräch mit Susanne Beyer und Ulrike Knöfel
DER SPIEGEL live im Spiegelsaal

Clärchens Ballhaus

Berlin

Text

Jonathan Meese is a guest at the SPIEGEL discussion in Clärchens Ballhaus in Berlin. Together with Susanne Beyer, deputy editor-in-chief of SPIEGEL and Ulrike Knöfel, editor of the SPIEGEL department of culture, Meese will discuss the difference between art and culture and the significance of art for the future.
The discussion takes place four years after the legendary Spiegel discussion in Kassel, which culminated in a trial that wrote judicial history, as Meese was able to achieve a victory for artistic freedom.

MONDPARSIFAL ALPHA 1-8

(ERZMUTTERZ DER ABWEHRZ)

Theater an der Wien

Wien

Text

After the much-discussed cancellation of his directorial engagement at the Bayreuth Festival, the Wiener Festwochen took the opportunity for a special collaboration and invited Jonathan Meese to rethink Parsifal. Together with the composer Bernhard Lang, he takes Richard Wagner's "Parsifal" to a future dimension. Nietzsche already saw in Wagner not the seer of a future, as he might like to appear to us, but rather the interpreter and transfiguration of a past. Lang/Meese pick up the Wagner myth there and carry it into a far-off revolutionary year of the future, thus discovering the power of this music beyond historicizing pathos. The result is a wild ride through the forest of quotations in music, film and art history.

Works Text

For the days of the big event Jonathan Meese will change and arrange the Haus der Berliner Festspiele into an individual “green hill”, a new model of a festival hall in a parallel galaxy. Here, too: It is Slice me Nice! Wagner's mythical world of figures (Parsifal, Kundry or Klingsor) meets a moon base, which in turn is inhabited by Richard Wagner, as well as Fancy, Marlon Brando, Zardoz, the Wickerman and Barbarella. Buddha meets Crowley! An electrified Eagle Transporter hovers over the stage, there is a giant Thanksgiving straw doll, and the Grail community is waiting tirelessly for the Grails unveiling.

Text

After the much-discussed cancellation of his directorial engagement at the Bayreuth Festival, Jonathan Meese, together with the composer Bernhard Lang, takes the argument with Richard Wagner's "Parsifal" to a future dimension in a new interpretation. This is how the German premiere of MONDPARSIFAL - BETA 8-13 (HE WHO TOOK OFF TO TEACH THE "WAGNERIANS OF HORROR" THE REAL CREAPY HORROR... ), like the world premiere of MONDPARSIFAL - ALPHA 1-8 (ERZMUTTERZ DER ABWEHRZ) celebrated in Vienna in June of this year, is not a recreational act, but a musical-artistic voyage of discovery through quotations from music and film history.

DE PAKT MIT RICHARD WAGNERZ

(GESTATTENS’: DIE HÜGLEJANERZ HEBENS’ AB…)

Galerie Krinzinger

Works Text

The exhibition focuses on Jonathan Meese's varied and profound examination of the Parsifal theme. Since 1999, the artist has repeatedly dealt with the myth of Bayreuth and its creator Richard Wagner. Whether in a performance at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin or now in a new interpretation at the Wiener Festwochen: For the artist Meese, Parsifal is the artist of the future. In DE PAKT WITH RICHARD WAGNERZ, Jonathan Meese shows early works related to Wagner, as well as, for the first time in public, his stage and costume designs for the Bayreuth Festival. In addition, pictures, collages, sculptures and films document the development of the new interpretation of the subject matter "MONDPARSIFAL".

Works Text

On the occasion of his opera production “Mondparsifal” at the Wiener Festwochen, the world-famous Gemäldegalerie opens its door to the artist. Jonathan Meese lands with a new group of works, like a spaceship. Four locations in the area of the southern Alpine painting schools become associative venues, with which Meese, as in "Mondparsifal", explores the significance of the artistic for the future and asks Old Masters about it, Velazquez, Tintoretto, Raphael. At the same time he answers them with his own paintings and a Janus-head, the "chief of art". The sculpture is a point of concentration for Parsifal, Meese, Wagner and the viewers.

Text

It was all about sculpture ... wasn’t it? The first major solo museum exhibition in the USA showcased Jonathan Meese's diverse body of work, focusing on his three-dimensional works, which the artist developed early on in a variety of media. He created his first ceramic talisman at the age of 15. From the beginnings of his artistic career, he showed small assemblages and dioramas that had never been shown before, massive bronze sculptures, more recent large-format ceramics as well as models of stage sets for theatre and opera productions.
